Enhancing Vineyard Resilience: Grafting & Netting Techniques
Welcome to our latest vineyard newsletter, where we explore two crucial practices that are important to the way we manage our vines: grafting and netting. These techniques are vital for improving vine resilience, increasing yield, and ensuring the quality of the grapes, especially in the face of changing climates and growing pest pressures.
**What is Grafting?** Grafting is an age-old horticultural technique that involves joining the tissue of one plant (the scion) to the rootstock of another. This practice is particularly valuable in viticulture as it allows growers to combine the desirable traits of different grapevine varieties—such as disease resistance, drought tolerance, or improved fruit quality—into a single, stronger plant.
**Benefits of Grafting**
1. **Disease Resistance**: One of the most significant advantages of grafting is the ability to combat soil-borne diseases, such as phylloxera. By grafting European grape varieties (Vitis vinifera) onto resistant American rootstocks, vineyards can thrive even in areas where these pests are prevalent.
2. **Improved Yield and Quality**: Grafted vines can often produce higher yields with better-quality fruit. This is because the rootstock can be selected to enhance specific traits, such as nutrient uptake or water efficiency, which directly impact grape quality.
3. **Adaptability**: Grafting allows vineyards to adapt to changing environmental conditions. For instance, as climate change affects temperature and rainfall patterns, growers can select rootstocks that are better suited to these new conditions, ensuring the longevity and productivity of the vines.
We are using T-Bud Grafting to change the varietal. This year we are changing a section of the Merlot plants to Cabernet Sauvignon by cutting the top of the Merlot off and inserting some Cabernet Sauvignon bud wood into the trunk of the Merlot. This will grow out onto the trellis this year and produce fruit next season.
The second technique is Netting: The Role of Netting in the Vineyard
As the grapes ripen, they become increasingly attractive to birds and other wildlife, which can cause significant damage to the crop. Netting is a practical solution to this problem, providing a physical barrier that protects the fruit from being eaten or damaged.
Chido and his team recently installed overhead Netting. This type of netting covers the entire vine, providing comprehensive protection. It’s particularly effective in areas with high bird activity or where large flocks can descend on a vineyard.
The most immediate benefit is the reduction in crop loss due to birds, which can otherwise consume or spoil a significant portion of the harvest. By preventing bird damage, netting helps maintain the quality of the grapes, ensuring they reach optimal ripeness without being compromised. Netting is a non-toxic, environmentally friendly method of pest control. It reduces the need for chemical deterrents, aligning with sustainable viticulture practice.
Harvest is approaching. Come by for a visit & check out the progress in the vineyard!
